billy bragg letter 2

you mumbled –
apologetic –
thrusting a
carefully
crafted mix tape into my
ratty old book bag

it’s nothing –
just a couple songs
that i like –
and i know
you won’t like them at all so
it’s no big deal, ‘kay?

you were wrong –
it was enormous –
because you
opened your
carefully protected heart
unexpectedly

even now –
twenty years later –
certain songs
remind me
of the sound of your laughter
and your gentle touch

Lyrics

Linked to BJ’s Shadorma and Beyond, where our challenge for this week was to write either a poem with an ABAB rhyme scheme or a shadorma.  The shadorma is a non-rhyming six-line poem with a syllable count of 3/5/3/3/7/5.

The fellow in this poem was in my high school creative writing class and he *despised* rhyme.  In fact, he was quite vocal about his distaste for rhyming poetry!   So – I wrote linked shadormas in his honor.  (But he would have rebelled at that, too.)

Georgia supplied an *awesome* train photo for the challenge – and I *wanted* to bring this poem back to trains somehow – but just couldn’t get it to work.  So – please visit the post – it’s a great photo!

  1. …As I was saying in a comment only a couple of minutes ago, you do have a natural flair for characterisation – see the ‘mumbling’ stanza here 🙂

And, as someone who swears by the absolute value of a proper soundtrack, I can only applaud his good sense in expressing his feelings through the infallible medium of the mixtape!
