Butterflies. Raub's Normal Fourth Reader, 1878.

Raub’s Normal 4th Reader, 1878.

For Carpe Diem Tan Renga #78, our task was to add two lines (in approximately 7/7) to a hokku written by Shoha, an associate of Yosa Buson.  Here is the hokku:

at the wagon’s approach,
out from the grass
flies the butterfly

© Shoha (Tr. R. H. Blyth)

And here is my response:

at the wagon’s approach,
out from the grass
flies the butterfly                                 (Shoha)

how often life’s transitions
trample as much as they heal         (Paloma)
