holding their hands on their knees
evening at a house                                         (Basho)

the old log relents, gleaming –
old spirits in flight

over cold granite
the ancient roots coil –

damp earth in revolt
reclaiming what is hers

a path, sole to hip
under boughs

oak and pine in silhouette
and the scent of soil rising

among distant campfires
earth and water

in the droplets that feed the ferns
a glimmer of firelight                (Paloma)

Linked to Carpe Diem #745: Moonrise, where our challenge was to write an 8-stanza renga starting with this “moonrise” haiku (hokku):

tsuki shiro ya hiza ni te o oku yoi no yado

holding their hands on their knees
evening at a house

(Tr. Jane Reichhold)

The sequence of 8 stanzas is as follows:  3 / 2 / 3 / 2 / 3 / 2 / 3 / 2 (“ageku” / closing).  If you’d like to know more about composing renga, please visit Jane Reichhold’s site at ahapoetry.com

  1. A wonderful way to keep a record of a pleasant journey – a usage that haiku/renga fits perfectly, of course. My favourite section was –
    a path, sole to hip
    under boughs”
    – it seems to have a strolling rhythm, aptly enough 🙂

  2. So beautifully disciplined…it takes great courage to open a poem with a quote by Basho, and indeed, you did it justice.
This is the perfect inspiration to begin my week in gratitude. Thank-you Jen.

  3. Beautifully written – sweeps you right into the moment, the scene, the setting, – all of the smells, aromas, subtle yet aware. Great job 😀

  4. Wow .. this is really very good … like the sensations that surround me and can almost smell the damp foresty smell … like your new fern background btw. And thanks for the link, I think it’ll be very useful for the future.

    • Thanks Bastet — It was quite an experience — Mat Zemlya was alive and well 🙂
Glad you could use the information. Too
And hey – summer is here – I was restless and had to ditch the posies for some greenery! Glad you liked it! 😀

  5. Goodness me…. it is all in there. An entire scene lit up, even the dark nooks and crannies. So well done.
It seems we all rise to the occasion when required.
